They didn't have strong religions that could control their lives like Christianity or Islam. Confucianism and Buddhism are rather weak in terms of organizing life, or influencing life.

I think he is complaining about east asian consumerism. Like how they got attracted to shiny stuff to a point they abandoned their family or something, i have a lots of chinese blood though, and I never felt that way, maybe because I was mix with some bugis blood.
