Apple can charge a huge markup on iPhone because of iMessage, if a person in an iMessage group/text does not have an iPhone the group/conversation will lose a lot of features. I was thinking the same way, after buying a pair of wireless earbuds on the cheap side, I understood why people like wireless stuff. No cable means extra mobility, which are perfect in most daily situations such as working out, searching every pocket for something, etc.
