They ended up believing their own tellings about being saviors/moral bastions of the world. Particularly after WWII they were caught between two stools: 1) their self-expectation of savior of the world and 2) the reality that the natives wanted autonomy/didn't want British influence.
Previously they used their self-expectation as moral savior of the world to govern over others in order to show them the right path, this would however imply a racial/cultural hierarchy (a belief that became more and more detested after WWII). Without it the moral justification flew out of the window.
Now with no way to justify their violence in front of others and themselves they failed. The christianity/appeal to moral superiority which once served as the justification of their imperialism became their undoing, because notions of superiority of certain cultures/races became more and more eroded and with it their on morals based conquest stagnated and in the end everything broke away.
Being a conqueror was after rejecting human hierarchies no longer something that was compatible with their self-expectations/values, so with no way to suppress the growing demands with a certain amount of cruelty they gradually gave up.
In the end what does it take to be a conqueror:
A) A belief of cultural supremacy (like in Rome/like during the crusades)
B) a belief of racial supremacy (like in Hitler Germany/like in Imperial Japan)
- often mixed, here imperialism/expansionism can be justified with morals/ideology
C) an abstinence of morals/total nihilism with no (ideological/moral) justification apart from one's own wants, an embracement of the total nihilty of life, rarely the basis for states (in WWII the SS brigades RONA/Dirlewanger as well as many Askaris)
The only reason why English imperialism failed was their rejection of suprematism/hierarchies while still keeping morals.
