Yeah same tbhngl if the fulcrum is pure world building specifically in terms of creativity and depth with the weighing of player agency included it's definitely going to be these two for me

I've never played Planescape Torment even though I bought it and I heard so many good things about it.

When it comes to pure writing it's beyond reproach, it can contend with new vegas and vtmb when it comes to the worldbuilding/setting/atmosphere easily. But I don't know I feel like new vegas and vtmb is replete with characterization in way that planescape torment is not and that's notwithstanding the gameplay
I'd include it with vtmb and new vegas, those are the three that I'm ultimately torn between.

I didn't include fallout 1 and 2 because new vegas is just more creative and a better rpg srry

i only included morrowind with oblivion because oblivion's storyline and quests are holistically better but lacks the uniqueness of morrowind with it's setting and gameplay and environmental storytelling approach

and as for skyrim it needs at least 255 mods to make it above a 6/10

I think i'm choosing new vegas mainly for how formative it was for me but also the factions in new vegas are more creative and better written than vtmb and i think that probably extends to the storyline overall especially given the tangible ripple effects of your actions in the game world where player agency is wholly and principally incorporated and has a level of verisimilitude to the point where it makes even vtmb feel streamlined

also the setting of new vegas is unrivaled with its creativity: an overt american 1800's western with swing/jazzy casino-high-life 40's culture placed in a retro futuristic post apocalyptic world wherein a totalitarian misogynistic roman revivalist faction crucifies and purifies it while there simultaneously exists elvis worshipping larping cultists and peppered in is a vestige of vault dwelling people who colonized an air base building their entire culture around aviation and explosives as a response to the outside world ultimately becoming isolated and removed from it while simultaneously a centuries-old visionary capitalist who was born before the apocalypse clings onto to life by essentially becoming an AI where he rules a cultural renaissance city with automatons by decree of an iron fist

like there truly doesn't exist a single game that can share a modicum of new vegas' likeness

one might say: it has the most personality

yeah its way too conventional and contrived in that sense
new vegas' narrative is just way more layered with the many things happening in the background, more hums underneath the hood with more interesting power grabs, i find the political situation of new vegas to be more interesting too

I'd describe the mass effect games as pretty good too, they have a lot cool science fiction literary inspirations
but by far the best selling point of those games would be the character-driven nature of the story especially regarding the well executed romance, tali and liara in particular
Tons of memorable moments in that series: mordin's sacrifice, the suicide mission, the resistance and potential outcomes of the quarian vs geth tali vs legion debacle, talking to sovereign for the fist time, thanes death, etc.

But as for roleplaying it takes an acute b-line nose dive to the bottom with the second entry

the horrific and cyclical nature of the nameless one's journey of identity and self discovery in that dark fantasy setting; unraveling the layers and layers of ripples that he's added to the sea of sigil in previous lives, wholly unbeknownst of what he has done in these countless iterations, navigating through it and learning it's totality as the player was stellar story telling and absolute kino in execution

i think that game easily has the most interesting factions from a writing perspective, immediately I think of the dustmen and sensates

also that scene where the city wall is alive and was trying to divide itself and you had to kill those fucking niggers from repairing it in order to make it outside of it was cool as fuck

that scene where you meet ravel through sensory orbs in that brothel of philosophical discussion was also absolutely cool as fuck

the nameless one's mortality evolving into it's own life form, him stumbling upon notes from past selves, him meeting the other iterations of himself at the end were likewise cool as fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

the game is just replete with unforgettable moments

I played through FFXIII when I was in HS and then halfway played through FFXIII-2 before I realized I played for over 100 hours(combined from both games) and still had no idea what the fuck was going on or why I should care about any of it.
