Taking things personally is rather rational especially when someone has to go as far as to tell you NOT to take it personally.
Often people say it when they've done something to offend/ sleight oyu but they're trying to run away from culpability for the action by tampering with the reason. Such as "I do this to everyone, oh I was not judging you as a person I am just really tired right now so that's why I got irritable, oh I just get angry and irritable at everyone it's not just you".
