Imo when it comes to more serious realistic games, they peaked with the PS3/360. You had the perfect balance between realism and stylization.
As for cartoonish more stylized games, they peaked with Xbox/GameCube visually.

I don't know about peaking, but I agree PS3/360 was the point when graphics became good enough. That's why I generally agree with Nintendo's strategy of weak technological improvement since Gamecube.

My issue is with this strategy is you miss out on most third-party games.
Other than indies and old games.
Ps3 to ps4 saw some improvement in graphics but ps4 to ps5 was literally non existent and goys bought it

Arkham Knight looks better than most modern games.
The new generation is so garbage both in gameplay and graphics.
Being "realistic" is just monotonous and boring to look at because we see every day when we look outside the screen, the stylization and originality that games once had visually is gone now for this boring attempt to look like reality.
The gameplay also feels so boring and stale, like they are beyond afraid to risk something new and "lose profits" like fuck off, that was all video game was about, that was why people were excited for new games, now it just changes the number on the title and keep the same gameplay.
New games are just copying what is trending, like souless corporate subhumans. There is nothing to see that u already didn't see before, is bad and is only going to get worse.

I'd say ps4 was when it peaked. Ps3 was a good improvement over ps2 but still looked rough in a lot of areas, especially character models, lighting and shadows. PS4 was when people were actually blown away by the graphical realism in games like RDR 2, Gow 2018 etc. Characters actually look like real people in ps4 games compared to ps3.

PS4 definitely set the bar for the modern standard. In terms of biggest jump I'd say PS1-->PS2 and Wii-->Wii U were very impressive.

Some games from 2015 like The Witcher 3 and Dying Light still look almost as good as what is being published now, but with better art direction.
PS3/Xbox 360 era is when it peaked. Barely any graphical improvements from then.
There isn't much to improve on unless it can somehow pass for actual reality
I've played games with 4k path tracing and all that which is genuinely impressive, but when actually playing games, you need to go out of your way to look for these improvements to care.

PS5 is a whole different level from PS3.
I think they are close to peak on some games but AI will do a lot in the future. Physics aren't perfect yet.

PS4 graphics are still very nice and it's obvious it peaked there.
It was during ps3 but graphics its all ways what people care avout since the beginning of gaming
