Title. I literally have no idea, in UK it’s still 1 Islam but I’m aware in parts of the Middle East its Sunni and Shia and other branches so what’s the difference?

they have a different hadith corpus; the holy book of the muslims is de-jure the quran, but de-facto its the books of hadith. the hadith are the alleged sayings of the prophet and his companions.
The shia follow the four books, while the sunni follow the six books (yes, they're literally called that). they each have more books than that but thats the main canon.

shia thinks 'ali and his lineage were the legitimate successors (caliphs) to Muhammad, and do not believe the other three of the four caliphs were legitimate.
