Alopecia areata is a different condition than androgenetic alopecia and not quite comparable in terms of meds, outcomes, etc.
Anyway, minoxidil works but not for everybody. Some people respond well, others don't.

Must have been some other component in the specific formulation he took. Minoxidil itself does not harm the skin.
