Not only could you physically discipline her (within reason), but up until 1993 in the US and 1991 in the UK, you had conjugal rights. They now consider that marital rape so you are no longer guaranteed sex. At least in some states, a wife withholding sex is considered emotional abuse or abandonment.

There's really no incentive to marry these days. There's nothing in it for men, especially since there is a growing call for outright cuckoldry and egalitarianism. Fuck that.
