I think the idea of owning a pet is weird in general and if you're buying some GMO breed who can barely breathe or walk, but it looks cute, you're acting extremely unethically (adopting a pet is fine)
normie morality is superficial and it's the same with their love for animals: they get dopamine rush from seeing cute things and they'll claim they love them, but they won't ever dig deeper into the ethics
you can have a moral system which doesn't lead into veganism, but most normies will agree with vegan ethics and feel bad about their eating habits if you show them a picture of a cute pig or a cow, but they usually won't go vegan, because normies don't really care about ethics and they just get a temporary emotional reaction from seeing cute things: my pet rabbit deserves to live, but the anonymous rabbit on my plate? whatever
