I think its partially because we tend to humanize our pets; giving them human characteristics in our minds when in reality they are just animals, they live in an entirely world than we do a world that we aren't capable of empathizing with.thats how some people care more about animals than other people , because we think of them as such. also dogs cant criticize you or be mean to you so there is comfort in your interaction with it.
