What makes prison a punishment?
Serious What are the (formal) punitive aspects of prison?
No freedom to do what you want at any moment, same monotonous lifestyle every day. Hey wait a second, this sounds like real life
Being locked up with low inhib psychopaths who bully, rape, beat up, murder, the ones they can. Hell on earth.
no videogames or tv in prison, and your pretty much living in boredom for the entirety of your sentence. Plus theres also a chance that you might get raped in prison if your seen as weak
Prison has similarities to real life, but anyone here saying it's exactly the same would 100% never take a free trip to prison for a few years. 
The threat of rape and violence aren't supposed to be part of the punishment. Those are also crimes.
I mean in the purest sense if prisons worked ideally, what is supposed to be the punishment aspect of it? You're not supposed to fear being raped, gangs aren't supposed to exist, those are all symptoms of a broken prison system.
it doesnt matter because prison guards dont give a fuck if your getting raped by tyrone and might actually reward tyrone with extra yardtime for doing so
By now its common knowledge that guards don't care and that is part of the prison experience. Who knows maybe its encouraged by state/ guards.
