Everybody thought that Russian army would be like in Call of Duty games or cold war movies and they would absolutely destroy and conquer Ukraine in one week but nope they still can't reach Kiev. And their most important ship was sunk apart from all the deaths and destruction of equipment. But still Putin fanboys keep repeating it's all part of the plan and that if Russia hasn't defeated Ukraine is because they don't want to kek.
Ya all the military analysts I read at the start of the war said Russia would win in a few weeks. Then they said Russia can still win in a few months, its just a question of how fast they bring in 'the rest of their army' to finish it off, and what the Russian's goals are.
The military analysts didn't understand how powerful the anti-tank weapons are. Or in general how hard it is to push into big towns and cities where the defenders are dug in and where they can be reinforced.
There is also the vastness of Ukraine that is hard to imagine. Say the Russians do a giant pincer movement to encircle a city. Then all those Russian forces along the pincer claws are going to be exposed to hit and run attacks, including their supply trucks. If they then chase the Ukrainian hit and run teams further in, they get pulled yet further into the vastness of Ukraine.
50-100 years ago there wasn't cars and trucks and good roads everywhere as one example of how things change from past wars. Ukraine since its all farms, there is roads going everywhere.
Then with the defenses on both sides with the trenches, underground bunkers, tunnels, concrete buildings. Lets say one side takes brutal losses and takes a layer of those over. Then behind that is another layer. The Russians are building their defensive lines 3 layers deep. And if the first layer started to go down, they can build yet more layers deeper in.
