I agree to an extent. I think that fear of aging and of death reflects, amongst other things (vanity being an obvious one), a growing sense of life as purposeless. Paradoxically, as people struggle more to determine the purpose of their life, they cling to life more assiduously.

This should actually be intuitive. If your life has a purpose, it also has a telos. If you believe that the purpose of your life is to serve your creator, then you accept that your life is a gift from Him that He can also take back. Indeed, such a person might not even regard their life or time on earth as a possession they have a "right" to, but rather a gift over which they have temporary stewardship. If you define your purpose in life primarily through your family (possibly also connected to a wider community or ethnie) then you see your purpose as to act as a parent and grandparent but, after that, to have a diminishing role in family affairs and ultimately to make way for the coming generations of parents and grandparents. Even if you define your life through something more self-directed, such as your craft or work, say, then ultimately your work is done, or you become physically or mentally unable to continue it, or others take it up in your stead -- there is a natural end point to your life.

People with no purpose in life partly hope that they will stumble across one if they live for long enough, whether they actively seek or commit to one or not. Or, more often, they come to see life as nothing more than a series of disconnected sensory ephemera, and regard their purpose in life as to seek out pleasurable rather than painful stimulii. This, of course, is never really satisfying or nourishing and could continue forever -- it has no obvious telos. So what we get is a bunch of people unhappy and aimless in life, but also clinging to it desperately and psychologically incapable of facing, still less coming to terms with, death.
