The dude was probably volcel out of fear. The fear of castration is a theme in the movie. You see it when he sleeps with his feminist affair when he dreams of some leg scissors or something and in the end he gets bukakke'd. So the entire movie might have been a subliminal MGTOW message about comitted men losing their manhood. I mean feminism became big during that time and marriages started declining.
