The Akagi (赤城) was an aircraft carrier built for the Imperial Japanese Navy, it was named after Mount Akagi. Initially when laid down she was intended to be part of the Amagi class battlecruisers but due to the Washington Naval Treaty which limited capital ships she was converted to an aircraft carrier.

Construction of Akagi as an aircraft carrier began on 19 November 1923 and she was commissioned in 1927. Akagi (and another aircraft carrier named Kaga) was completed with three superimposed flight decks, the only carrier(s) ever to be designed so. As originally completed, Akagi carried an air group of 28 torpedo bombers, 16 fighters and 16 reconnaissance aircraft. Akagi was armed with ten 50-caliber 20 cm 3rd Year Type No. 1 guns, one on each side of the middle flight deck, and she carried a dedicated anti-aircraft armament of six twin 45-caliber 12 cm 10th Year Type guns.

Between 24 October 1935 and 31 August 1938 Akagi underwent a massive refit. This refit took twice as long as intended due to the effects of the Great Depression on the Japanese economy. During this refit she lost her three flight dicks which were replaced by two larger enclosed hangars for the more modern and heaver warplanes of the time. Akagi's speed was already satisfactory and the only changes to her machinery were the replacement of the mixed coal/oil-fired boilers with modern oil-fired units and the improvement of the ventilation arrangements. This increased the engine's horsepower from 131,200 to 133,000 yet decreased her overall speed by 1 knot. Other changes include the replacement of the anti aircraft turrets.

Akagi served in the Second Sino-Japanese War and due to the experiences and the success of concentrated air power the Japanese bundled all of their carriers together in what we now know as the "Kido Butai", she was placed in the First Carrier Division alongside Kaga and became the flagship of the Kido Butai. When the Pacific War broke out she took part in battles such as "The Attack on Pearl Harbor", "The Dutch East Indies Campaign", "The Invasion of Rabaul", "The Indian Ocean Raid" and "The Bombing of Darwin, Australia".

After a brief refit the Kido Butai was sent to the Midway atoll for what the Japanese navy thought would be the decisive battle to cripple the US navy. After bombarding American forces on the atoll, Akagi and the other carriers were attacked by aircraft from Midway and the carriers Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown. Dive bombers from Enterprise's air group severely damaged Akagi and when it became obvious that she could not be saved, she was scuttled to prevent her from falling into enemy hands.
