Gohan should've became the main character in the cell saga. That nigga was hyped up since the START of Z only for him to fall off.

Im sure dragonball was meant to be finished at the cell saga but toriyama was forced to write the buu saga. so he was likely forced to reuse goku

Unpopular Opinion: The introduction of Multi-Universal Gods is one of the main reasons Super fell off. Beerus if a forever-moving goalpost, SSG and SSGSS forms are garbage. SSJ4 and its roots from GT was way better. I don't care if UI was foreshadowed since episode 1, it's still mid. I don't know how they could've made Super good. The Black Goku Arc had amazing potential. Zamasu was SO GREAT.
