Back when they were threatening Iran I called that we would back down, because Iran is too strong. I analyzed Iran's military strength and Iran's willingness to fight and take serious casualties in Syria. And the Iranian air defense systems and size of the country.
For example people who didn't understand the factors thought there would be airstrikes deep into Iran. But I felt that wouldn't be possible.

There is enough money to start and go to war. The question is if they sustain that war long term. They should hope for a quick win. Napoleon and Hitler thought Russia would be an easy walk in the park with a quick and easy win. So with the Russians once you enter their home soil its a fight that will go all the way i.e to the bitter end and will take time.
Unlike Vietnam the Russians may be poor but they have industry and produce heavy weaponry so not a push over at all.
