People were too quick to get bored of the war. They were expecting like a 2 hour Hollywood movie style war. But wars take awhile to get going and building up. Like the governments they are scaling up the militaries and the military industrial production.

To give an analogy, I think Stalingrad was 3 years into WWII. Dday was nearing 5 years into the war I think.
