western colonial empires viewed other races/ethnicities as inferior subhuman beings so they could exploit them. completely zero empathy, they were treated worse than animals. the worst types of torture and humiliation you can think of. compare that to the devşirme system; young kids were taken away from christian families and raised with islam to grow up to be janissaries (elite class in the military) or bureaucrats. for that time period, that wasn't bad at all. there were even cases where parents willingly gave their kids away so that they could have better lives, and there were some bureaucrats who gave their families (who remained christian) better lives after they gained power. i don't know if you were aware of this before i told you, if you were, please do explain how you think devşirme is in any way comparable to western colonialism.
