The shooter has not been identified.
Officers found the two women and the child, a boy of about 2, after responding just after 10:15 a.m. Monday to the Pride Rock residence hall.
The boy was taken to hospital and is in stable condition, police said.
The university issued a shelter in place warning to students and staff after the shooting, but lifted it at around 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day as well as on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The school, in a post on its website said campus police were actively investigating three gunshot victims in Pride Rock Residence Hall on the A&M-Commerce campus. There have been two confirmed deaths. The third victim has been taken to the hospital for treatment.”
Officers were stationed throughout the campus, the post said.
"Due to the ongoing investigation, Pride Rock and surrounding areas are still blocked off," the school said in an update.
“The Rayburn Student Center is available for students that may be displaced by the ongoing investigation. Counselors are available in Rayburn Student Center conference rooms on campus for anyone who needs assistance coping with this situation."
