It's the ostrich effect, you put your head in the sand. You know your face is bad, but you don't want to know how bad. You still want to hold on to the last shred of hope you have, even though you swear you've cast aside all hope by now. "Maybe I am below average but I can't be that below average," you tolerate having your illusions shattered but only to an extent. Instead of shattering all your illusions at once you fall back close to the edge but still deny going over it. What's the point anyway? You will just feel worse.
But if its over then its over. No use in putting your head in the sand. But then again it also hurts to see people's prejudice against you laid bare. A truecel has devil horns, every negative trait that a person could assign to you will be assigned to you all because of your face.
