I’m an Asian male to female trans woman visiting HK for study abroad. Today, my cohort went to Kowloon park and we stopped at McDonald’s for lunch. Out of worry for safety as I’m early into my transition and worry about not “passing” yet, as well as having read mixed opinions about being LGBT+ in HK, I opted to use the men’s bathroom. I wore a casual workout outfit, although my shirt was pink.
I barely made it into the bathroom when the cleaner came up to me and tried to push me out. In the few Canto words I knew, I said “bathroom” and “want”, trying to get him to understand I just needed to pee!! At this point, a random guy comes over to us and starts yelling at me in Canto and waving me out(?) but I have no idea what he’s saying. I end up leaving, nauseous at having been yelled at and not knowing what happened.
