Actually a surplus of males is an anomaly. Lots of men die as children and young adults. When you reduce child mortality the result is surplus of men.

Because of gametogensis there are exactly 50/50 x and y sperm, the research you mention fails to consider that "y sperm" (female) dies quicker in the female genital tract faster than "x sperm" (male) and when they took samples the y sperm was in fewer quantity than the x sperm. The evolutionary reasoning you provided also doesn't make sense because you don't need a surplus of men to further a lineage (the only important part of evolution), only more women.
