I recommend reaper. If you're wanting to record guitar

IK multimedia has good virtual amps, and so does waves.

You have to mess with the settings in order to fix the input delay from the guitar. There's a guide on youtube for it. Think the things called asio.

Then for drums they have a free kit called MTpowerdrumkit 2. It has custom groves and styles, so you can just combine certain ones and find a good bpm.
