There were plenty of fellow inkwells back in ~2000. The difference was we had expectations that we'd eventually get out of it, and reasonably so. Plus, the internet was just a very different place. People were open to talk about whatever, nothing like the constant normalfag judging we have now.

It wasn't until 2008, and especially 2012 when dating apps became prevalent that the situation became obvious.
