Scientists believe that this "third man" acts as a kind of psychological defense mechanism, helping people cope with stress, loneliness, and despair during critical moments. The brain creates an illusion of a companion to give the person a sense of support and strength, which increases their chances of survival.
The "third man syndrome" often appears as a voice, an inner dialogue, or a feeling that someone is nearby helping to make the right decisions. Psychologists and neuroscientists study this phenomenon because it is linked to how we perceive reality and how the brain adapts to extreme conditions.
All of our problems are mental. Our brains could give us an imaginary companion to make us happy. Hell, fuck it, we don't even need that. Our brains could literally just make us feel happiness and not lessen the negative emotions. There is no need for any of that anyway; our surival is already guaranteed. We don't need any of that pain, or lack of happiness to keep us alive. If anything, it's counterintuitive, since the biggest risk to the survival of many of us here is suicide.\
But that is not how evolution works. There is no intelligent design. Our bodies are not designed in any way, they have merely adapted to the average human's environment over the course of many, many years. Through chance, so there is no adaptation for us, to the society, environment that we live in. This environment is the perfect counterbalance to our brains to make us suffer.
