Honestly, I think the dual mating strategy has been known about for a long time. Fuck, there are romance novels about the distinction between the dashing but unreliable Alpha and the dependable but unappealing Beta from at least the 19th century and probably before that (probably since the end of feudalism or something...) These are not new ideas. But what is different is, perhaps:

1) Men have lost or given up their moral and social authority over women such that women's thirst for Chad is unconstrained. You can break this down into many different sub-factors if you want: male desire for a virginal or at least relatively chaste partner is derided as controlling; women's sexual appetite is regarded as something to be nurtured rather than constrained; familial bonds have been eroded such that the role of father as protector from predatory males is undermined; women's acquisitiveness and status obsession is magnified in a materialistic and spiritually bereft society, etc, etc..
2) People are more narcissistic and less likely to accept an unsatisfying lot in life -- this includes both the reluctance of women to settle for an unremarkable provider and the diminished desire of men to be unremarkable providers. I get the sense that in the past men who "manned up" and married slutty or wayward women or who "kept" women who got their dick elsewhere recognised that this was a somewhat demeaning fate but accepted it because i) they had a social role to play and ii) they regarded the alternative -- LDAR -- as significantly less appealing.
