Upsets rarely happen at the World Cup, occurring in the group stage, and occasionally in the round of 16. After the round of 16, upsets rarely happen. Maybe South Korea’s run at the 2002 world cup was unusual, but it was littered with controversy. Now look at the Euros and their past winners: Greece and Portugal have won it in the past 20 years which shows it isn’t World Cup tier in terms of talent vs mentality. Everyone tryhards at the World Cup, so it’s very hard for mediocre teams to win. Didier Deschamps is a garbage coach and still won the World Cup with France in 2018, and lost in the final to a decent team in 2022 with talent and experience.
