I'd say it's a mix of those two and a genuine belief among at least some of them that lookism is something only women have to contend with. A pretty large part of society pushes the belief that looks don't matter for men, after all, with that being the default worldview of both feminists and most raditionalists and redpillers, and it's not like most, or even a majority of, foids are introspective enough to reason that since looks matter to them personally then they probably matter to other women as well.
