Well, that’s easy, because most people are very dumb and misguided.

Well, many of them are dumb, but beyond that, smart people are often narcissistic sociopaths who manipulate the system for their own gain.
Why do parents have their kids circumcised? Because their dumb, uninformed, and misguided. But why do doctors do it? Shouldn’t they know better? They do, but they simply do not care. Their greed and personal success trumps even what sliver of empathy they might feel for a literal newborn baby.
Why are lawyers all slimey bastards that manipulate the legal system for personal gain at the cost of good order and discipline? Because they’re smart, and smart people are selfish assholes.
Once you realize that human behavior is a sliding scale between dumb hicks and Patrick Bateman-type savants, everything starts to make perfect sense. This is actually the main point of American Psycho, that all those big whigs in the financial industry were all just cookie cutter, gifted, narcissistic sociopaths who all considered themselves to be the most important person on Earth simultaneously. Their inability to feel empathy only compounds their feelings that they’re special snowflakes that are somehow different from everyone else. Rather than using their intelligence for the betterment of humanity, they use their smarts to get rich as quick as possible by manipulating a broken, fiat financial system where you can somehow create wealth by moving numbers back and forth on a screen.

Elon Musk even discussed how the brain drain the financial and legal industry enacts on the rest of society hurts humanity as a whole. Smart people gravitate towards business and law not because of passion, but because of money. They’re not necessarily gifted in those areas; they’re just smarter than everyone else and pick the industry that they can best capitalize off their intelligence.
These people could be engineers, artists, designers, local politicians, and much more, but instead play with numbers or laws because it makes them rich.
