Because the face is literally a survival mechanism. Height is more useful for fighting but you face should look intimidating to animals and other men to deter and prevent fighting anyway.

Prominent cheekbones and jaw means a good bite and big canines which look intimidating and also gives an alpha voice as well as give a good bite.

So basically the way genes are selected to survive is mainly through the face and a bit voice.
