He is widely referred to in the popular discourse as "Bernie." This would be equivalent to Donald Trump commonly being called "Donnie," an even bigger indignity than how Hillary Clinton made the point of calling him "Donald" during their 2016 debates.
Sanders' supporters themselves emphasized the name "Bernie" over "Sanders" in their own propaganda, which is perhaps a reflection of their internalized, suppressed anti-Semitism, their casual, amateurish nature, or both.
Significantly, none other than Joe Biden felt bad for Sanders over this, correcting himself during their last debate when he reflexively called him "Bernie," and politely using his surname instead. But Sanders' supporters, the very people he should have been able to count on, have not given him this same courtesy, unfortunately.
