The psychosocial impact of hair loss among men: a multinational European study - PubMed
The results of this survey indicate a gap between the need for treatment of hair loss and initiation of such treatment among men in five European countries. Further research is needed into the factors affecting men's willingness to seek treatment for hair loss.

This study surveyed 1,536 men aged 18 to 45 in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, with 729 (47%) reporting hair loss. Among these men, over 70% considered hair an important aspect of their image, and 62% believed hair loss could negatively impact self-esteem. Specific concerns included a perceived loss of personal attractiveness (43%), fear of baldness (42%), concerns about aging (37%), negative effects on social life (22%), and feelings of depression (21%). Additionally, 38% of men without stable romantic relationships reported reduced self-confidence due to hair loss.
Despite these concerns, only 10% of men were currently seeking treatment, and 75% had never pursued any form of treatment. However, among the 73 men who reported successful treatment, 43% to 59% experienced improved self-esteem and a more positive self-image. The study acknowledges limitations, including reliance on self-reported hair loss and nonvalidated psychological assessment tools. The findings highlight a gap between the psychological impact of hair loss and the low rate of treatment, suggesting the need for further research into barriers preventing men from seeking hair loss treatment.
