Take a look at these people:
Do you notice anything strange? These are not people!
The uncanny effect is a term used to describe the relationship between the human-like appearance of a robotic object and the emotional response it evokes.
This perception of a being who looks human but not completely triggers a self-defense response in humans because we tend to fear what we don't know.
Unattractive men like us, whose features are unbalanced and generally far from the average, somewhat trigger the same mechanism, which makes average people avoid us at all costs, if not harm us because some humans are more prone to violence as a reaction of fear.
But this effect doesn't boil down only to physical appearance; it's also influenced by behavior. Neurodivergent individuals might manifest behavioral traits that are perceived as uncanny by the average population.
Autists, as a case in point, have difficulty making appropriate facial expressions at the right times, trouble making spontaneous expressions than more intentional ones, trouble understanding subtle humor like sarcasm reasonably well, and so on. All of these traits prevent them from coming off as normal human beings.
And that's basically the origin of this perception. We are barely humans face and behavior wise. Other humans avoid us or reject us because they fear what they can't predict.
