it was a popular conjunction in the Middle Ages or at least it that's what modern media portrays it as. I guess some nerds into fantasy shit like DnD and LOTR started to copy it in the 90s-2000s thinking it sounded cool and thus it became a meme in the 2010s when "cringe culture" took off.
 
Origin of the term as it is popularized online: Those kids we all knew in middleschool (maybe HS too) who felt that differentiating themselves with cringey theatric quarks would get them a chance with a foid.
