Once, the Portuguese and Spanish came to Japan. With them came the Jesuits. Francisco de Xavier was responsible for the mission in Japan. Together with Diego Lainez, who was of Jewish descent, and others, he founded the Jesuit Order.
The aggressive approach of the Jesuits and the poor behavior of the foreigners led Japan to isolate itself strictly from the outside world in 1622. Europeans who attempted to enter Japan on their own risked the death penalty or lifelong imprisonment.
On March 31, 1854, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry and his squadron forced Japan to open its doors to America. This was followed by Great Britain, Russia, and the Netherlands.
Perry's son-in-law was the Jewish financier, diplomat, and politician August Belmont Sr. He worked at the Rothschild banking house and, in this capacity, advised the Papal States on their financial dealings.
