I'm a big fan of Batman The Animated Series (A show I'd highly recommend if you haven't watched it) and one episode I've re-watched lately struck a personal chord with me. It's the debut episode for The Mad Hatter, a somewhat underrated Batman villain based on the titular Alice in Wonderland character.
Anyways, he starts off as a shy yet brilliant scientist working on mind-altering technology. He has no friends, has a (female) boss who constantly berates him, and worst of all - he's infatuated with a co-worker of his. While incredibly awkward around her, he makes an effort to approach only to find out that she's dating some Chad.
Heartbroken, he eventually contemplates using one of his mind-control chips on her but changes his mind because he wants genuine love instead of a soulless puppet.
To his joy, he finds out that she had an argument with her boyfriend and they broke up. Seeing this as his chance, he fakes confidence by donning a "Mad Hatter" persona and asks her out on a date. During the course of the date, he utilizes his tech in order to impress her: saving her from muggers, arranging a romantic dinner, etc. (She wasn't aware that all of those people were under his control) It all seemed to go well, ending in a dance and him escorting her home.
Naturally, Hatter is fucking OVERJOYED, skipping to work and saying hi to everyone despite his previous timidness. At last, he's found the love and happiness he's always wanted... Not! Chad shows up at her house, apologizes, and asks her to marry him which she accepts in a heartbeat. Next day, she thanks ol' betabux for "cheering her up" and announces her engagement.
Enraged due to his hopes being crushed, he tracks down the fiance and makes him break up with her in another futile attempt to win her affections. He then fills her house with flowers and tries his luck again, only to be rejected. Not only that, Batman swoops in to kick his ass.
The whole thing turns into a fight, with him kidnapping the girl and mind-controlling her because he feels like he has no choice.
Of course, he ends up defeated at the end - forced to watch as the girl he fell for embraces Chad right in front of his eyes.
Bonus points for him looking like a total subhuman.
