In many ways China is more powerful. The US is a deeply divided country that doesn't have as much sway over its own citizens or businesses. If China orders its citizens to do X, they will do X. If the US tries to order its citizens to do anything, roughly 50% will say fuck you, we're not gonna. US citizens and businesses can sue the gov't and win, which is great if you're a US citizen but on the other hand this lack of unity is a disadvantage on the world stage, especially against a country that rules its citizens with an iron fist.
