this is because most likely they're all gone at stuff like big music festivals or events, and:
a) no one will answer, they definitely can't hang out and are busy anyway
b) you've confirmed to them you were left behind and aren't going to any festivals or whatever with anyone else this summer

so you get nothing out of it and your "friends" now think less of you.

I thought of it like this, friends can maybe set up people on a blind date so maybe you get the opportunity to show betabux whereas in a bar/club, she’s on the prowl for hookups. This has like a single digit chance of working but yeah, better than 0%.

i see it a little differently, basically being introduced by friends/family is the only nice and polite way to enter a woman's sphere, anything else and you're on thin ice / have to perform excellently / be ready to answer fashionably to "so who the fuck are you anyway?"

i only have contacts because some guy needed me to help him make money, and i bumped into my cousin by pure chance while out in the city.
if people have anyone to call it's either because of stuff like this or because they still talk to the guys from 5th grade.
