Suggestions for retro games pre ps1

I want to get more into retro gaming. the classic games I can think of that have aged well are
• Nintendo games
• Castlevania
• Bomberman
• gradius
• contra
• adventure Island
I tried downloading and playing the Sega collection but very much disliked Alex Kid and basically everything outside of Gun star heroes and Shinobi. I didn't enjoy any of the sonic games outside of 1.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking of playing Dragon Quest and Phantasy Star
