As a philosophical materialist, I have been accustomed to believing that there's simply nothing after death. When we die, our sleep is eternal and our consciousness evaporates and physical body decomposes and rots away. This seemed like the most reasonable explanation of death to me so I adopted it.
But lately as my suicidal thoughts have started to reemerge after many months of cope, I have been getting this fear of going to hell in my afterlife. I fear punishment. This is an entirely new feeling to me and it's scaring me, leaving me helpless against worsening circumstances in my life. I don't know what to do now. My conviction has been lost.
