class movement is actually very rare. a majority of poor people stay poor, middle class stay middle class, and rich stay rich. it usually takes a few generations of consistent efforts either way to change circumstances. their ability to live truly free isn't one bad move away, but for the elite it's a measuring contest who can have the most wealth which in that sense it is a race determined move by move
i would also say our currency now is backed by more than any other currency in history. we have hundreds of thousands of heavily armed government agents, globalized banks, and a placated citizenry who a majority refuse to do transactions outside of fiat currency. the entire society backs the currency in the sense that if you don't use it, or don't have it, you cannot live.

Humans were never "free" after civilisation was founded, for civilisation to progress society has to suppress their biological instincts, otherwise we would be living like chimpanzees.
A structured society with rules and norms is necessary for humans to live together peacefully and progress as a species. Full fledged freedom is sacrificed and traded for the benefits of living in a complex society. Elites are never free because they're supposed to keep this entire system in check by making sure the lower classes don't chimp out all of a sudden.
