One factor is as things are getting more complex, quite a few of the normies are no longer able to keep up with the more complex work. Like they used to be doing more routine work white collar, which is now mainly automated. On the other hand there is increasing opportunity all the time for more complex work, like AI programming. But many normies aren't able to work at that level, so companies are downsizing them.
