I’m not sure what it is, the game world just feels very alive despite the game showing its age. It’s gotta be a mixture of the music, the detailed landscape with plenty of flora and fauna. The plethora of realistic wind and ambient noises, realistic lighting and shading, etc.
Not only that but the world has such a rich history, lore so rich that it really makes the world of Skyrim feel real and believable, with tons of different history books to lots of environmental story telling.
For example a skeleton being found on a mountain holding a baby skeleton, or bodies of people who died ages ago but left behind notes for someone they knew.
Small details like this only makes the experience far more engaging and the world feel more alive.
And the npcs, despite having such low intelligence and the same reused voice actors. They’re still very engaging as well with excellent acting. And they make you genuinely care about their stories. I’ve hardly ever played a boring quest in Skyrim.
Are there any games that even come close to this?
