Makes me feel like I don't have an excuse not to learn Japanese. I think things are more normal over there outside of the work conditions.

I've tried learning Japanese and it's nothing like learning European languages. Learning kanji breaks your soul.

Even if I was illiterate I'd be happy just to be able to hold a conversation in Japanese.

Of course that would rule out visual novels but you could still enjoy music, anime, dramas, etc...

With Chinese you need the kanji plus its tonal so one word could mean 8 different things based on how you say it.

Putting it in that perspective I don't think it's that bad although I haven't started yet.

As a worst case scenario you could only write romaji but all Japanese know it because it's taught in schools there.

Plus if you speak one of those eastern languages I'm pretty sure they have a different alphabet; writing system, so you're already used to switching.

Cyrillic is not that different from latin. Most latin languages are pretty straight forward, with English being the awkward exception
