As a long-time fan of the Saints Row franchise, I feel the first entry often doesn't receive the recognition it truly deserves. While the later games in the series leaned heavily into outrageous humor and over-the-top action, Saints Row 1 possessed a grounded charm that made it stand out. In my opinion, it is a hidden gem, and it is high time for a remastered version with updated graphics to help newer generations of gamers experience the brilliance of this original title.

Grounded storytelling and world-building
What makes Saints Row 1 so memorable is its approach to storytelling and world-building. Unlike the sequels that quickly became synonymous with outlandish scenarios, the first game maintained a more serious tone. The story centers on the rise of the 3rd Street Saints, a gang trying to take control of Stilwater, a city torn apart by rival factions. The narrative isn't bogged down by absurdities but instead focuses on a raw and authentic depiction of gang warfare. This realistic approach made the game feel gritty and engaging, offering a fresh perspective compared to the more chaotic, larger-than-life plots of later titles.

The gang territory system
Another key element that sets Saints Row 1 apart is its dynamic gang territory system. This feature created a constant sense of struggle for dominance over the city. Turf wars were an ever-present part of the gameplay, and the process of taking over and defending territory became a core part of the experience. Unlike other open-world games, Saints Row 1 required players to think strategically, not just about completing missions but also about expanding and protecting their influence. This constant back-and-forth with rival gangs added a layer of tension and excitement, keeping players fully invested in the progression of their criminal empire

Immersive atmosphere
The atmosphere in Saints Row 1 was also exceptional. While the graphics may not have aged as well as some would hope, the city of Stilwater was full of character and life. Each neighborhood had its own distinct personality, and the gritty, urban environment added to the overall immersion. The world didn’t just feel like a playground for chaos, it felt like a city where every corner had a story to tell. The simple yet effective open-world design made exploration rewarding, and the sense of progress was both satisfying and fulfilling. There was a genuine satisfaction in watching your gang’s influence spread throughout the city, neighborhood by neighborhood.

The original version - Why is Saints Row 1 so Special?????

What sets Saints Row 1 apart from the later entries in the franchise is its commitment to a more grounded, realistic approach to gang warfare. Saints Row 2 and beyond certainly have their strengths, but they quickly became defined by wackier and more absurd elements that often overshadowed the serious themes of the first game. While the sequels embraced outlandish humor and over-the-top action, Saints Row 1 kept its feet firmly planted in the world of street politics, gang rivalries, and the struggle for power. It was an approach that felt authentic and gritty, and that made the first game so special.

Conclusion: we need a remaster!
This is precisely why I believe Saints Row 1 deserves a remaster. With modern graphics and quality-of-life improvements, the game could introduce a whole new generation of gamers to its captivating world. The core gameplay mechanics, the strategic turf wars, the narrative depth, and the immersive world, are still just as compelling as they were when the game first launched. A remaster would allow these elements to shine with updated visuals, bringing the city of Stilwater and the Saints' journey to life like never before.
In conclusion, Saints Row 1 was not just the beginning of a beloved series,it was a standout game that laid the foundation for the open-world gang experience. Its immersive atmosphere, grounded narrative, and engaging gang territory system made it a game that truly stood out. While the later entries have their merits, Saints Row 1's charm lies in its ability to create an authentic and engaging experience without leaning too heavily on absurdity. It’s time for this classic to receive the attention it deserves with a remastered version that preserves what made it so great while introducing it to new audiences.

You played it? Im so cought up in older games, especially the pre 2012 ones, they are by far better in every aspect imagineable than the trash available in todays market

I convinced my mom to get me an xbox 360 just so I could play it. I feel bad about it to this day. I shouldn't beat myself up over it though. Overcoming autism is a journey.

Never played it.

I remember finding a copy of this game in a bush on some field near my house a few years ago.

Good times.

It needs a remaster so I can play it on ultra settings on my PC and of course max settings on xbox

I’d like to see GTA IV remastered too

For some reason earlier open world games seem much better, Even the saints row games that appeared later are utter dogshit in comparison to the older ones. Given the rumours Ive heard about gta6, i would not even bother buying it to be honest, absolute garbage. i might do it out of curiosity and to cope cause I have literally nothing better to do in my freetime, but not cause i have a craving for playing the game and storyline itself.

Both Saints Row 1 and 2 deserve a remaster. They are absolutely phenomenal games.

It's such a shame that the series went to shit.

Of course, 2 is my 2nd favorite and a really memorable one.
Started off with the well known prison break, amazing Game

They should've made a remaster of SR1 or 2, instead of the utter shit that was the newest game.

I bought those newer SR games and genuinely tried to force myself to like it but it wasn't possible... some games are meant to be and stay down to earth, grounded and realistic. The follow up games that were released had too much of a sci-fi vibe, didn't appeal to me at all and I didn't like the atmosphere either.

See, that's the thing with the bigger game titles nowadays. They run out of ideas, hence they try to force things into the game that aren't needed at all and completely change the game itself
