Another calculation is I added up the Net Change each year from 1992-2021, aka after the Soviet Union fell apart.
Births minus Deaths from 1992-2021: -15,717,129
An interesting aspect is over that time period the Russian population has not declined that much.
1991 population: 148,394,000
2021 population: 145,820,000
That is a change of just: -2,574,000
Ergo the Russians have had a net immigration of +13,200,000 since 1991. And included in that number must be territorial expansion.
Turns out the Russians aren't as different from other European countries as we thought.. making up for a declining population with immigration and in Russia's case territorial expansion in addition.
"According to the United Nations, Russia's immigrant population is the world's third-largest, numbering over 11.6 million;[26] most of which are from post-Soviet states.[27]"
