I don't know why they choose completely random names.
I once knew a Chinese who went by "Michelle" when she was living in the west.
She said her real name sounded more or less exactly the same as Michelle.
She also said there was a traditional way of writing her real name in western characters. But the spelling of that was something like Mei Hsiu, and if you show that to westerners they don't even know how to start trying to pronounce it so they fail miserably. So it made sense to her to just run with Michelle, it was easier and it achieved the desired result.
(Knowing her was also how I first discovered that JBW doesn't work... )

Poor guy, I think it's actually cool to call yourself other things that are typically unordinary. Too many people have no respect for their names and find no value in it, so you may as well make it something cool-sounding. God knows I wouldn't want to be known as whatever chink name I had if I went to study elsewhere.
