The idea that "respect is earned" misses the point. Basic respect should be given to everyone automatically. It’s about being decent to others. If everyone waited for others to “earn” respect, no one would treat anyone well. Someone has to go first. Basic respect should be the default. It’s not about admiration; it’s about treating others like human beings. Refusing to respect someone right away often says more about you than them. Showing respect upfront doesn’t mean you trust or admire someone, but it sets the tone for better interactions. If they prove they don’t deserve it, fine, but starting with rudeness doesn’t help anyone.
